The Actiontec GT784WN is a modem router that provides you with flexibility for a modest value. It's a single-band model that supports the advanced 802.11n technology. The previous GT704WR version has only one antenna and its speed is limited to 54 Mbps. It also doesn’t support a Wi-Fi connection.
The router is designed to be positioned either vertically or horizontally as it comes with a stand and has anti-slip rubber pads on its back. The item measures 6.8 x 1.3 x 7 inches, so it won't take up too much space. There are 4 Ethernet ports, 1 ADSL port, and 1 phone port on its right side. Its left side contains several LED indicators (Power, DSL, Ethernet, etc.). The unit has black chassis and includes 2 external antennas.
It was easy to perform the connections since all the ports and the provided cables are color-coded (power cord is black, Ethernet cable is yellow, and phone cable is gray).
If you will face some issues with the router's performance out of the box, try to download an upgrade for the GT784WN firmware from the Actiontec official website.
Since the setup process is just as simple as it was promised by the manufacturer, I can estimate it for 10 out of 10.
The Actiontec 300 Mbps wireless-N ADSL modem router GT784WN has an impressive number of security features, providing near-commercial grade protection. It uses WPA and WPA2 encryptions and has an ID assignation feature (you can assign a unique ID to each wireless gateway) that prevents hacking. You also can fully customize the firewall, i.e. filter content, add additional encryption to prevent unwanted access to your network, etc. Thus, I think that this model deserves 10 for the security level that it can provide.
The router has a data transfer rate of 300 Mbps. It's based on a microprocessor with a single core. Considering that it's a single-band (2.4 GHz) model, I didn’t expect more. The provided MIMO antenna reduces the dead spots in your Wi-Fi connection to a minimum and speeds up the internet.
Before beginning to test the router for this Actiontec GT784WN review, I placed it in the same room with my devices, next to the TV, in order to not create interference with walls and other objects. There were no drop-offs in the Wi-Fi connection, so I was impressed by its consistency. However, I've also noticed that the router quickly becomes warm during the operation, therefore it may not be designed to work for twenty-four hours.
That's why I gave the unit a 9 out of 10 rating.
